My intention is to serve you by helping you to open and soften your heart, to align with the bigger energy around you and to feel a sense of empowerment. You will learn specific bio-mechanical alignment principles which will afford greater opening, helping to prevent injury and allow for greater freedom in your yoga postures. Why Inner Body Bright? Say "Inner Body Bright " to any Anusara student and they will puff up their inner body expanding the light and energy within and soften their outer body radiating positive energy outwards. "Inner Body Bright, Side Body Long" is something you will often hear in Anusara yoga classes - reminding us in each pose to allow the inner light to expand and to soften and pause before applying self effort. Inner Body Bright reminds us to Open to Grace, to tune in to the currents of our heart and to the pulsating ocean of consciousness within us. Why Anusara? Anusara is a uniquely integrated approach to hatha yoga in which the art of the human spirit is powerfully blended with the science of bio-mechanics. Anusara means flowing with grace, following your heart or stepping into the currents of your heart. Anusara Yoga weaves a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness with the Universal Principles of Alignment. Anusara impacts the hearts of its practitioners with its embracing philosophy and lightness of spirit. This elegant system combines precise therapeutic biomechanics with a vision of playfulness, creativity and kindness that welcomes everyone! The emphasis of Anusara is on a set of "Universal Principles of Alignment" which underlie "heart opening" postures and the spiritual / meditative benefits of hatha yoga. Attainable bliss and joy in practice and everyday life are an important aspect of the underlying philosophy.
My Journey I have been studying Anusara Yoga since 2002 when I happened upon Anusara teachers Paul & Sommer Sorbin in a little studio in Downtown Sarasota, Florida. Shortly afterward Paul & Sommer moved to Maryland but thankfully they sent me to Betsey Downing's Garden of The Heart studio which had just opened in Sarasota. Looking back on it this was a synchronous event for me - more than a co-incidence. I think of synchronous events as things that happen to you or things that you notice that are always happening to you - when you are in alignment with nature - when you are following your heart or stepping into the currents of grace.
For 18 months myself and my wife Amy practiced with Paul & Sommer, then Jaye and Betsey, before moving back to Ireland in 2004, immediately after my first workshop with John Friend. This period of practice has shaped and influenced my life in so many positive ways. The teachings that I received at Garden of The Heart have continued to resonate within me for a long time. On returning to Ireland I studied and practice Ashtanga with David Collins in Blackrock. I am very grateful to David for his purity, his teachings, his dedication, his commitment and his support. I recognize that there is no one style of yoga that serves all people - and if anyone is ever looking for a truly pure Ashtanga experience I send them to David. During this period my wife Amy made contact with Bridget Woods Kramer in Cornwall, threw caution to the wind and went to do a teacher training with Bridget in Cornwall. She came back positively brimming with energy and enthusiasm - and told me that she had found the "Betsey of Europe". Since then we have taken every opportunity to practice with Bridget, doing immersions, retreats and teacher trainings. Bridget has been a huge influence in our lives and our yoga. We invited Bridget to Dublin in 2006 for the first classes lead by a certified Anusara teacher in Ireland - and with that the seeds of Anusara were planted in Ireland. We have assisted in bringing Bridget, Deb Neubauer and Jayendra Hanley - and as I write (march 2009) the pulsations of energy of the anusara community in Ireland are continuing to pulsate at higher frequencies. To all our teachers both on and off the yoga mat myself and Amy are eternally grateful. On the yoga mat these teachers are: John Friend, Betsey Downing, Bridget Woods Kramer, David Collins, Jaye Martin, Deb Neubauer, Sianna Sherman, Desiree Rumbaugh, Marc Holtzman, Jayendra Hanley, Lois Nesbitt and Sommer & Paul Sorbin. |
